The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism

The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was founded by Professor Hu Yuanfeng, a well-known domestic endocrinologist in the 1950s. Also in 1950s, the department was the first to conduct clinical research on sulfonylureas drugs for treatment of diabetes. In 1978, the Diabetes Lab was founded and the first domestic research on pancreatic islets transplantation was carried out. Its glycosylated hemoglobin and islet cell antibody test methods maintained at the top international level. In 1992, Professor Zhang Hongde, Professor Shao Anhua and Professor Sheng Zhengyan held the post of the Director or academic leader of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism. They made great contributions to the development of the department. In 2005, Professor Peng Yongde became the new director and academic leader. He is mainly responsible for the clinical medical, scientific research and teaching work of diabetes, thyroid disease, metabolic bone disease and other internal secretion related disease. At present, the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism is qualified to grant master's and doctor's degree of endocrinology and metabolism of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It is also one of the first disciplines of the Hospital that cultivates post graduates and first national clinical pharmacology research base of the Hospital. Now it is the National Diabetes Education and Management Certification Unit, Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Cooperation Base, National Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Quality Control Standard Experimental Base, Base of Cultivating Post-doctor in Endocrinology and Standardized Training Base for Shanghai Resident Doctors and Endocrinology Specialists. 

In recent years, the department has conducted in-depth study on the pathogenesis of endocrine and metabolic diseases. It has undertaken several research projects at national and ministerial level which involve fields such as mechanisms of insulin resistance, metabolic inflammation, oxidative stress, thyroid function evaluation and interventional treatment of the pregnant women and drug therapy for osteoporosis. 

The Northern Branch of the Department has 32 beds and discharge 1,400 patients annually. The outpaitient includes General Outpatient for Endocrinology, Specialized Outpatient for Endocrinology, Osteoporosis Outpatient, Expert Outpatient for Endocrinology and Special Endocrinology with an annual outpatient visit of 170,000. The Southern Branch of the department has 16 beds with annual patients discharge of 800 and annual outpatient visit more than 70,000. There are 27 doctors in the department including three doctors with senior professional title, 10 doctors with associate senior professional title, one doctoral supervisor, four master's supervisors, 10 doctors, 12 masters, five permanent workers at the diabetes lab including one permanent professor. Now, the administrative director of the Department is Peng Yongde, and the Executive Director of Southern Branch and the Deputy Administrative Director is Wu Yijie and Wang Yufan respectively.
